Kindergarten Readiness
"What does my child need to know?"
These are some of the things you can work on with your child to help build confidence and readiness for kindergarten!
Academics:
*Identify the letters of the alphabet
*Identify letter sounds
*Identify numbers 0-10
*Identify shapes
*Correctly hold a pencil (use correct grip-index finger and thumb-"pincher grip")
*Correctly hold scissors to cut paper
*Can write name correctly (with one upper case letter)
Social:
*Can follow one and two-step directions (ex. Hang up your backpack and sit down in your chair.)
*Can sit for a period of time and listen in a group setting
*Can share and work in a group of children
*Can communicate thoughts and needs
Self-help:
*Can button, zip and fasten clothing as needed
*Can put on and take off a jacket/sweater
*Can un-zip backpack
*Can un-zip lunch box and open containers
Please keep in mind that teachers and teacher assistants will always assist your child as needed, but we will encourage self-help skills and confidence by teaching the children to help themselves as much as possible.
(Ex. opening packages, juice boxes, containers, packing backpacks, tying shoes, zipping jackets, etc...)
